The New Conversations Around Infertility and Black Women

ADVOCATE, PUBLIC SPEAKER & LIBRARIAN

Regina Townsend is an advocate, public speaker, and librarian who uses the intersection of these passions to help others feel seen, heard, and empowered by bringing light to the issues affecting marginalized groups.

As a young Black woman, while I’d heard about infertility, stories of black women and couples seemed nonexistent or rare. As I started to learn more and more about how common infertility actually was, and the fact that it actually affected 1 in 8 couples in the US, I became even more passionate about spreading the word that not only did this disease affect black women, but that we deserved to be heard about it.

Black women experience infertility at almost 2x the rate of our counterparts and yet we are least likely to seek treatment. Many conditions directly impact fertility, such as fibroids, endometriosis, PCOS, and others disproportionately affect black women as well. The stereotypical belief that black women are somehow more fertile, or that we don’t participate in foster care, adoption, or fertility treatments is another factor.

I believe we can combat these things by increasing representation, information, education, and discussion. Infertility is lonely enough without feeling like a minority inside of a minority. I’m a Librarian by profession and writer by passion, and I consider writing and reading to be one of the most personal forms of communication, entertainment and education.

The Role of the Government in Protecting Black Women and Girls

CONGRESSWOMAN

Congresswoman Robin L. Kelly of Illinois is the Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Black Women and Girls.

Congresswoman Kelly is dedicated to improving our nation’s health and requires a dedicated and holistic advancement of access to quality and affordable health care. It also requires a strong focus on promoting physical fitness, nutrition, and preventative medicine including increased access to oral health care, and healthcare innovation.

In the United States, there are an estimated 700 pregnancy-related deaths per year and 60 percent of these are considered preventable. The crisis is most severe for Black mothers in America, who are dying at 3 to 4 times the rate of their white counterparts.

“The maternal health crisis has disproportionately impacted Black, Indigenous, and people of color for far too long,” said Congresswoman Kelly. “We need to develop and share best practices to improve maternal health outcomes, but we also need to address some of the underlying biases among medical professionals that might interfere with delivering the best maternal care. While this crisis will not be eradicated overnight, the Maternal Health Quality Improvement Act, along with the more comprehensive MOMMA’s Act, present tangible steps we can take to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity.”

The bipartisan bill would implement evidence-based best practices and policies within the medical community to improve maternal health outcomes. The bill would also support health professional training programs focused on biases that may affect the quality of maternal care for racial and ethnic groups. Additionally, the bill would provide funding to establish rural obstetric networks to improve birth outcomes and reduce maternal morbidity in rural areas.
